SAFETY TIPS |
| Being a real estate professional
puts you in constant contact with strangers - often on vacant
property. Take heed and stay safe. GENERAL
*
Don't give out personal information to a prospect.
*Leave a copy of basic
personal data at your office or home. Also, you should include
the make, model, color, year and license number of your car.
*Establish an emergency
phone code with your office.
*Always take your car, not the clients' or customers'.
*Trust your instincts. If
you have a "funny feeling," call the office or leave at once.
*Avoid wearing expensive
jewelry.
*Since addresses cannot be
traced from cellular phones, be sure to give the dispatcher your
location immediately if you must call 911 for help.
SHOWING PROPERTIES
*Meet in the office, not at the
property.
*Make a copy of the
prospect's driver's license.
*Develop an "initial
prospect" form that includes spaces for name, address, phone
number, vehicle description and tag number. Require it be filled
out.
*If in doubt, take a partner
with you.
*Don't park where your car
could be blocked in.
*If you accompany someone
through a property, let the prospect lead the way. This will
make you less apt to be cornered in a room or grabbed from
behind.
OPEN HOUSES
*Show the home with a partner.
*Be alert for behaviors that
don't fit the pattern of a potential buyer, such as checking the
alarm system, doors and locks.
*Leave your purse and
expensive jewelry at home.
*Arrive early and survey all
rooms to determine an escape route.
*Never leave keys in
front-door locks.
*Use your cell phone to call
in to your office or home on a regular schedule.
IN YOU CAR
*Select a four-door sedan with
automatic door locks and windows.
*Use a cell phone.
*Make sure your car is in
good working order and your gas tank full.
*Leave your itinerary with
your office.
*Avoid eye contact with
other drivers.
*Be sure that your car's
alarm system can be set off by a handheld remote device and that
you know how to use it. This will attract attention to you
if you fee threatened.
ADVERTISING
*Never put your home phone
number in an advertisement; use a pager, cell phone or office
number instead.
*Never advertise a house as
vacant. That would tell an assailant that no owner would
be coming home soon.
*Never record an answering
machine that announces that you are not home.
